Bruce is gettin’ real tired of your shenanigans, Tony.
There was one day a year that Bruce forced himself to head to his hometown of Datyon, Ohio. One day. Anything more that was too much for him to handle. Flashes of his childhood plagued enough every time he closed his eyes and attempted to get just a few hours rest, he didn’t need reminding. He already remembered too well.
But he couldn’t stay away on the date of his mother’s death. He couldn’t leave her alone on that day like he had the day she’d died. If he’d been there then, maybe she would still be here. Maybe it would have been him instead of her, the way it should have been. She shouldn’t have tried protecting him. If it hadn’t been for him…
Bruce approached the familiar grave with a heavy heart. He find his way there blindfolded if necessary, managing not to trip over any of the other headstones despite his clumsy nature. He’d only been there a handful of times, unable to bring himself to look at her name etched into the granite as often as she deserved, but he couldn’t forget the trek if he tried.
A couple of hours passed and Bruce found himself talking more than he’d ever found himself talking in one sitting. Even if she wasn’t actually there, she was the only person who had ever cared to listen, so he spoke into the open air, retelling events that even he’d forgotten until that moment. He told her about his upcoming internship with the government, his latest projects, his chance to study abroad, and even about Betty, the first girl he’d met who seemed not only able to stand his company, but to almost enjoy it. Surely he was delusional.
As the sun began to slowly set, he noticed a dark figure approaching and the rigid posture caught his attention immediately, putting him on edge. Word of his release had gotten to him, of course, but even he wouldn’t be despicable enough to show his face here on today of all days. Would he?
He tried to tell himself that he was imagining things, but as the voice that still haunted him cut through the chillingly still air, he found himself unable to deny it any longer. His father was really there. “Boy.”
Bruce closed his eyes tightly and swallowed hard, trying his best to put a lid on the confusing mix of emotions that were suddenly provoked from behind the wall he’d put up long ago. “You’ve got some nerve showing up here today.” He muttered loud enough for his father to hear if he was listening, though if he was, it would have been a first.
This was not going to end well, he just knew it…
